Do AI assistants answer phone calls?

Some do; many do not, and the word “voice” hides the difference. Answering a telephone needs a phone number and SIP telephony. Browser voice means a visitor speaks to an assistant on your website. Both are called voice, and only one rings.

How it actually works

This is the single most common mismatch of expectation in the category, and the vocabulary encourages it. “AI receptionist” strongly implies a phone line to anyone who has run a business with one. Several products in this market do genuinely answer inbound calls over SIP, so the expectation is not unreasonable — it is just not universal.

Browser voice solves a narrower problem well: a visitor on your site who would rather talk than type, or cannot easily type. It is answered in the assistant's own synthesised voice, costs nothing per minute, and reaches only people already on your website.

If your customers ring you, choose a product that answers phones and do not let a browser-voice demo persuade you otherwise. RegenticFlow does not answer phone calls, and we avoid the word receptionist for that reason.

What it can't do

  • RegenticFlow's voice is browser voice. There is no phone number, no SIP, no call forwarding, and no roadmap promise here about it.
  • Voice needs the visitor to allow microphone access, which some will decline.
  • Synthesised speech is good, not indistinguishable, and every visitor is told they are speaking to an AI.
